Volition, Inc.

Volition, Inc. was an American games studio founded in 1993 in Champaign, Illinois. The studio was originally established as part of Parallax Software but soon became independent. During its existence, it established itself as one of the most highly regarded developers of action games and open-world titles.

Its first major success came with the space simulator Descent: FreeSpace – The Great War, which was acclaimed for its intricate storyline, atmosphere and technical execution. Its sequel, FreeSpace 2, is still regarded today as one of the best space simulators of all time.

However, it was the Red Faction series that brought the studio its greatest fame. The first instalment, released in 2001, captivated players with its revolutionary Geo-Mod technology, which allowed parts of the environment to be destroyed in real time. The series continued with Red Faction II, Red Faction: Guerrilla and Red Faction: Armageddon, with Guerrilla in particular becoming famous for its extensive destruction of buildings in an open world.

Another iconic franchise for the studio was the Saints Row series. Originally conceived as an urban action game inspired by the gangster genre, it gradually evolved into one of the craziest open-world series. The instalments Saints Row 2, Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row IV offered humour, over-the-top action, extensive character and vehicle customisation options, and a host of unforgettable missions.

Volition also created the games Summoner, Summoner 2, The Punisher and Agents of Mayhem, and contributed to the development of other projects for THQ and, later, Deep Silver. The studio was renowned for its technological innovations, sophisticated physics and willingness to experiment with new game mechanics.

Following the bankruptcy of THQ in 2013, the rights to the studio were transferred to Deep Silver. In 2023, Volition, Inc. was wound up after thirty years of existence as part of the restructuring of the Embracer Group.

Nevertheless, Volition, Inc. remains one of the most significant American game studios of its generation. The Saints Row and Red Faction series remain among the best-known action games to this day and have significantly influenced the development of open-world titles and environmental destruction.
