Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance is a video game developed by Acclaim Studios Manchester and published by Acclaim Entertainment.

The game begins as Invictus Thrax recounts how the Roman Empire under the noble Emperor Trajan fell under the command of the despotic and sadistic consular Arruntius after Trajan's mysterious death. Arruntius ascended the imperial throne and brought an age of tyranny and destruction to Rome, turning the city of Rome into a personal playground called the Arruntium, where gladiators fought and died in the streets for Arruntius' cruel pastime was his obsession. Thrax describes how he once became gladiatorial master to Trajan before being sent to fight in the Colosseum by Arruntius to eliminate the last of Trajan's supporters.

Thrax is killed by an unknown force after defeating the other gladiators, and is sent to the afterlife of Elysium where he meets the masked child spirits Romulus and Remus, who reveal to Thrax that Arruntius murdered Trajan using black magic from the dark gods of terror, fear, and children on Mars, Phobos and Deimos. They used the support of bribed senators to seize the imperial throne. The Brother Spirits claim that Thrax was chosen by the Roman gods to act as their champion because of Arruntius' rule weakening the power of the gods, to kill Arruntius, prevent the death of Rome at his hands, and restore Rome's glory. Thrax agrees to act as their champion and travels through Elysium with forces gifted from the gods obtained to complete the task via the monsters of myth and the dreaded Phobos and Deimos to restore the life force of Rome, represented by the corrupted Capitoline Wolf, which Thrax helps rebuild after defeating both gods.
