This time, Spyro's task is in the category of the really hard ones. He must save the dragon realm from the nasty and evil Red Dragon. He has scattered dark gems everywhere to help him gain absolute dominance. So Spyro's task is obvious. To find, collect and destroy all the black gems and thus thwart the Red Dragon's plans.

As Spyro the Pink Dragon travels around the realm, he will immediately know which part is already under the Red Dragon's influence and which is not. Where the black gem lies on the ground, the landscape changes in real time, the appearance of enemies, music, sounds, sky, objects, everything. The same applies to the situation where the player destroys the black gem. Everything changes back.

Spyro will fight enemies using his fire breath, the swish of his tail and the kick of his feet. All of these attacks can also be upgraded throughout the game. A simple flame breath can become water breath or freezing breath, which must be used against different types of enemies. In addition to the protagonist Spyro, the game offers the possibility to control other well-known characters from previous installments in the series. These include Blink the mole, Sparx the dragonfly, Hunter the monkey, and Byrd the penguin.
