Burnout is a racing video game developed by Criterion Games and published by Acclaim Entertainment. The game was released for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube in 2001. Burnout is the first installment in a highly successful series of racing games that focus on speed, adrenaline and destruction.

The game sets itself apart from traditional racing games with its unique focus on risky driving and high-speed racing. Players are rewarded for risky manoeuvres such as driving in the opposite direction, narrowly missing other vehicles and drifting. This daring driving fulfills the so-called "Boost Meter", which gives players a temporary speed boost.

Burnout includes several game modes such as Championship, Single Race and Time Attack. In Championship mode, players choose a vehicle and participate in a series of races to become champions. During the races, players must dodge traffic and opponents while trying to reach the finish line as quickly as possible.
