The fourth installment in the Quake series picks up immediately after the end of the second installment and, unlike its predecessor, focuses mainly on the singleplayer part of the game.

A war rages in space between humans and Stroggs. The Stroggs are an alien race, most similar in behaviour to the Borg from Star Trek. Their goal is to conquer other races and assimilate them into other Stroggs. The struggle seems desperate, but when a Marine both destroys the planetary defenses of the enemy and kills the Strogg leader Macron (end of Quake II), the humans reunite and prepare for a direct assault on the main planet - the Stroggos. It is at this point that we find ourselves in the shoes of Marine Mathew Kane, a member of the Rhino Squad, who finds himself in orbit of the planet Stroggos with his brothers in arms. After a short while, however, a missile hits the ship and they all go down. The player is thus entrusted with the most important task of all - to find the survivors and try to destroy the Stroggs once and for all. To do this, they need to destroy the Nexus, the system that links the minds of the Stroggs together.

Gameplay-wise, it's a classic shooter where you're on your own most of the time, but there's also some tank driving, in which you'll look at the surface of the inhospitable Stroggos. In terms of weapons, expect the typical Quake offerings (nailgun, rail gun, lightning gun). Only the BFG has been replaced by the Dark Matter Gun. Quake 4 uses the id Tech 4 engine, already used in Doom 3, so it is very similar to this game in terms of graphics and HW requirements, with the difference that Quake offers brighter locations and outdoor areas. Multiplayer is very limited compared to the previous game, offering only Deathmatch and Capture the Flag modes.
